About the Author

Judy Alsager, author of Gang Ranch: The Real Story, writes with a rare authenticity shaped by her own life on one of the largest and most legendary cattle ranches in North America. Her book has attracted the attention of multiple film companies, though Judy’s commitment to truth and accuracy led her to refuse changes that would have altered the story’s real ending. The events she recounts are supported by official records, including the Reasons for Judgment of the Honorable Mr. Justice Wood in Vancouver, following one of the longest court cases in Canadian history.

Judy’s story is not only about history and land, but about the people and families who lived and worked together across a vast and rugged landscape. She, along with her husband, children, parents, and brothers, moved to the Gang Ranch to build a life in the heart of British Columbia’s wild Chilcotin country. Stretching from the Fraser River and Churn Creek Plateau to the coastal mountains, this immense ranch held thirteen cow camps, each with its own story. Life there was both harsh and beautiful, filled with friendships, challenges, and unforgettable adventures.

Her children grew up with a freedom few know today — fishing in creeks, cooking trout over open fires, watching buffalo herds pass their door, and attending a one-room schoolhouse on the ranch. The lessons of respect for the land, wildlife, and community have carried forward into their lives, even as the Gang Ranch itself has been divided, logged, and changed forever.

Now living about an hour from the Gang Ranch on the banks of the Fraser River ‘ , Judy continues to live close to the land. She grows food, raises bees, and cultivates echinacea while preserving the memories and stories of a way of life that has all but disappeared. Her writing ensures that the history, hardships, and wild beauty of the Gang Ranch will not be forgotten.
